Holidays without hassle

Holidays without hassle

A few of my friends tell me that they never bother with travel insurance as “they don’t see the point”. As someone who writes an insurance blog, works in insurance and has even been known to sell the odd policy, that kind of attitude scares me to death! These are probably the kind of people who wouldn’t buy car insurance if it wasn’t illegal – and leave the rest of us to foot the bill if they went around causing chaos on the roads.
You might think that you’re all set for your holidays when the suitcase is packed and you’ve done your research into laser hair removal Asian skin, but organising your travel insurance (and not leaving it so late that you end up having to take the first crappy offer that you find) is even more important. When you start thinking about slimming down to get in your favourite summer bikini is about the time you should start doing your homework into what is the right kind of policy for you.
Travel insurance is a pretty common freebie with bank accounts these days, but if you’re lucky enough to have an account with Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest or any of the other financial institutions that offer this particular perk, don’t think that’s all the hard work done. Check if there are any exemptions, especially if you’re planning on going skiing or scuba diving or if you have any long-term health problems. The small print on these “free” policies can often reveal that they’re only free if you’re fit, healthy and only going to spend the weekend at a caravan site ten miles from your house!

Simples!

Simples!

Insurance adverts get a bad press these days; whether it’s the ubiquitous “Go Compare” opera singer or the karaoke tunes of the Glaswegian girl on “Confused.com” my boyfriend has a particular problem with insurance advertising. In fact, he has been known to groan with something akin to pain and storm from the room whenever he hears one of their jingles starting. I honestly think he’d rather talk about laser hair removal Asian skin or even go shopping than have to sit through the advert where the “Go Compare” guy is a mummy…
But there’s one insurance advert that we can agree has really hit the mark; treading the fine line between amusing and informative and not yet outstaying its welcome. I refer of course to Compare the Meerkat, er, Market and the wonderful Alexander Orlov. I often wonder if the people behind the real insurance comparison website are happy about the phenomenon they have created. I know plenty of people who have visited the meerkat version without ever once clicking on the banner advertising urging, or even begging, you to visit the real site and buy some cheap car insurance.
I do think that Alexander went a little too far with the publication of his autobiography, however. What was particularly worrying was that my local bookshop had it displayed in the non-fiction section! Either I had discovered the one person in the whole country who had never heard the catchphrase “simples” or the owner of the store had an unusual sense of humour… I didn’t buy it, by the way. I may enjoy comparing meerkats, but I think we learned all we need to know about Alexander’s story in the adverts don’t you?

Teenage troubles

Teenage troubles

I understand why young people have to pay more for their car insurance; they’re inexperienced drivers and, unfortunately, the statistics show that they are far more likely to be involved in accidents that are due to their own driving mistakes, than people of other ages. But some insurance companies seem to be taking the attitude that they’d rather not insure young drivers at all and are making it so impossible for teenagers to find affordable cover that they are forced to hang up their car keys for a few years.

Finding insurance can be as complicated and as confusing as tracking down a good deal on laser hair removal Asian skin and all! These online comparison sites can only help you if there are good deals out there, and many insurance companies are working together when it comes to deals for younger drivers to make sure that no-one is undercutting the competition.

This is how you get a situation like the one that was reported in a lot of newspapers this week – and it even made it to the BBC! One insurance company was quoting an astronomical £27,000 to insure 17-year-old drivers who had just passed their test, regardless of how powerful the car they would be driving is. This could lead to many teens paying way more in insurance than their vehicle is actually worth. It’s no wonder many parents are turning to a trick called “fronting” where they apply for the insurance, knowing that their children are going to be the ones driving the car most often. Of course, this will save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds, but the cost could be even higher if your teen is involved in an accident and it emerges they have been driving without insurance…

Top tips for your travel insurance

If you are looking for sound advice in regards to travel insurance, here is some information that will help you find value for money and avoid any pitfalls that you could encounter.

The most important point to remember is that you must be aware of what your travel insurance covers. Most companies include medical treatment, however factors such as cancelled flights, car theft while abroad or other events may not necessarily be included in your insurance package. Also, for people travelling abroad for a laser hair removal asian skin procedure, you should make sure your insurers covers you in the event that anything goes wrong.

It is also essential to know how long your policy will run for, particularly seeing as the dates on the agreement will be in according to GMT. Insurance companies will find a way to reject claims for even the most technical error on your behalf. Also, before you end in a situation where you must make a claim, make sure you have already researched how you will go about doing this. Know what telephone number or e-mail address to contact and retain any evidence, such as a receipt or a medical document, which may be required by your insurers.

Some countries can be excluded from specific insurance policies, therefore if you are planning on travelling to more than one country you should provide a full list of all the states you will be visiting so that your insurer can tell you if any of the countries are excluded from the agreements.

How to reduce you car insurance if you are a young driver

If you are a young driver then you are probably aware of the extortionate costs of car insurance for younger motorists. In fact, the average cost of comprehensive cover for men between the age of 17 and 22 is more than £2,000 in the UK – more than the cost of a year’s rent in some areas or the cost of laser hair removal asian skin in India.

The best means to reduce your level of premiums in the first instance is to choose the right car! Cars with higher specifications and higher performance rates are often accompanied by very high insurance costs. Find a car that is suitable for your general needs – unless you are planning to travel tens of thousands of miles a year, you won’t need anything that is top of the range just yet.

You should also investigate the type of insurance you require. The options include fully comprehensive cover or third party cover that covers fire and theft. The second option can be significantly less expensive because such vehicles are not insured if they are involved in accidents. Choosing this type of insurance which does not protect you in such events is a decision that you must make for yourself.

Purchasing security devices such as alarms or immobilisers can also help reduce costs because your insurers would determine that you are at a lower risk of car theft. Also, make sure you are the sole driver of your vehicle; otherwise you can expect your premiums to be higher. Either that or limit the number of additional drivers for your vehicle to keep your costs down.

Cooperative Insurance

Cooperative Insurance

The big seller for all types of insurance is peace of mind. As a consumer, you and the company are basically betting on whether or not some significant disaster will occur. It is interesting to look at the important components of determining what rate each person will pay. The insurance company will make money from safe drivers and need to pay out for those that have large and horrible accidents. Every consumer always asks themselves if it is better simply to put your money into a savings account and use that to pay for car repairs should you have an accident. The answer is a resounding ’maybe’. If you are looking for laser hair removal asian skin and want to place your bets on beauty then maybe the personal insurance is you best bet. One compromise is going with a company like the cooperative. Cooperatives operate differently from corporations in that the profits are distributed to their members instead of their share holders. What this means for you is that your insurance agency is not making money from you and then giving away that money to a pension fund, trust fund, or some other person who invests. The profits are given back to the members of the cooperative. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the insurance itself will be cheaper, it just means that you will have more peace of mind knowing that the profits from your investment will be equitably distributed back to yourself and others like you. It seems like a good idea.
